My Homestyle Take on Steak and Dumplings
Ingredients
For the Steak
- 2 lbs round steak, cut into 2-inch pieces
- 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp black pepper
For the Gravy
- 1 can cream of chicken soup (or cream of chicken with herbs)
- ½ cup milk
- 1 ¼ to 1 ½ cups water
For the Dumplings
- 2 cups flour
- 4 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp poultry seasoning
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup milk
Optional:
- Potatoes and carrots (recommended to steam before adding)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, and pepper. Coat the steak pieces evenly in the flour mixture.
- Brown the steak in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook until tender. Remove from heat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup, milk, and water.
- Pour the soup mixture into the skillet with the meat and simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring to combine.
- (Optional) If adding potatoes and carrots, steam them first, then stir into the meat mixture.
- Pour everything into a 9×13 baking dish.
Dumplings
- In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and poultry seasoning.
- Stir in vegetable oil and milk until a soft dough forms.
- Drop spoonfuls of dumpling mixture evenly over the meat.
Bake
Bake at 425°F for 20–30 minutes, until dumplings are golden brown and cooked through.
