California Casserole Bake

My Homestyle Take on Steak and Dumplings

Ingredients

For the Steak

  • 2 lbs round steak, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy

  • 1 can cream of chicken soup (or cream of chicken with herbs)
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 ¼ to 1 ½ cups water

For the Dumplings

  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp poultry seasoning
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup milk

Optional:

  • Potatoes and carrots (recommended to steam before adding)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, paprika, and pepper. Coat the steak pieces evenly in the flour mixture.
  3. Brown the steak in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook until tender. Remove from heat.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together cream of chicken soup, milk, and water.
  5. Pour the soup mixture into the skillet with the meat and simmer for 2–3 minutes, stirring to combine.
  6. (Optional) If adding potatoes and carrots, steam them first, then stir into the meat mixture.
  7. Pour everything into a 9×13 baking dish.

Dumplings

  1. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and poultry seasoning.
  2. Stir in vegetable oil and milk until a soft dough forms.
  3. Drop spoonfuls of dumpling mixture evenly over the meat.

Bake

Bake at 425°F for 20–30 minutes, until dumplings are golden brown and cooked through.
